When to Commission a Portrait for Christmas — and When January Is Kinder

Holiday gift lists reward things that can still arrive. A hand-painted portrait does not behave like a warehouse SKU. It is designed, approved, painted, and then dispatched from China. That is the point of the gift — and it is why December panic is a poor brief.

This journal note is about when to start, and when to wait until January. For pet originals, read the pet portrait wall-art guide. For a couple or newlywed gift that happens to land at Christmas, product facts live on the custom portrait as a wedding gift guide. This page will not clone that Guide’s title.

Why Christmas is a timing problem, not a style problem

Western Christmas gifting is a deadline. Portraits are a sequence. Standard Harmrit orders typically ship within 3–4 weeks from design approval; rush service ($79) cuts delivery time in roughly half. You get email updates when the design is ready, when painting begins, and when the piece ships with tracking. That is the whole rule — details sit on how long a portrait takes and where portraits are painted and shipped.

Do not treat “Christmas” as a carrier SLA. If you approve a design in late December, January is the honest arrival window.

When to commission before the holiday

1. You already have a photo everyone likes

Family Christmas cards are often the worst reference: group wide shots, indoor yellow light, jumpers, and motion blur. If you have a clearer photo from summer or a birthday, use that. Keep the photo rule short, then follow what photos work best and photo requirements.

2. The gift is a pet, not another matching print

A dog or cat on the wall often fits a family Christmas better than a new framed print that will rotate next season. How Harmrit paints wall-ready pet originals lives on the pet portrait wall-art guide. Why a painted original is a different gift from a print subscription lives on framed prints vs a painted original.

3. You can present a card now and the canvas later

If the painting will miss the tree, a note that the portrait is underway is kinder than a late apology. Unwrap the canvas in January as a second Christmas. Families remember the likeness, not whether it sat under the tree.

When January is kinder

Christmas gift decision matrix: when to commission a portrait before the holiday and when waiting until January is kinder.

- You are still hunting for a usable photo in mid-December.

- You want a couple portrait and cannot ask them for a favorite picture during holiday travel. Guest-vs-registry etiquette for couple portraits is a different journal note: when wedding guests or parents should commission a couple portrait.

- The recipient has asked for practical help, not another object.

- You need something in a bag this week. ToteCraft is print-on-demand, not a hand-painted portrait — How ToteCraft works and whether ToteCraft bags are print-on-demand.

What this page will not promise

Harmrit uses an AI design preview so you can approve direction before artists paint. The preview confirms composition and mood; it is not a guarantee of a pixel-identical painting, and it is not a multi-concept giveaway. Read how the AI preview works if you need the process.

This page will not invent a Christmas cut-off date, overnight painting, or archival-forever material claims. Timeline and origin stay on the FAQ answers above.
